The song is about a man who left his home town and 20 years on is thinking about returning and catching up with family and friends, many of whom he hasn't seen since he left.

He left his town of birth,
When he was thirty nine.
Filled with ambition and hope,
He thought that he’d do fine.
Now twenty years have passed,
Since he went away.
He tells all and sundry,
That he’ll return some day.

Verse 2:

He’d show lost family and friends,
That he has done real well.
And share with every one of them,

Perhaps he really doesn’t know,
