Aussies quite often call things by opposites, red-headed people will regularly be called "Bluey". Based on that, this person has a red fawn greyhound that he calls Bluey and whilst giving Bluey his daily exercise, he encounters an inquisitive but clever boy in this comical countryish song.
lyrics
My Greyhound Isn’t Grey by Darryl John (c) 2011
I went and (A) bought myself a doggy,
A (D) greyhound of all (A) things.
To get involved in racing in,
The (E) poor man’s sport of kings.
My (D) greyhound’s name is Bluey,
Just in (A) case you hadn’t guessed,
He’s not blue in colour,
He’s (E7) red, with a white (A) chest.
(A) A great Australian tradition,
Use (D) opposites as (A) names.
I somehow think that this applies,
(E) In the doggy game.
There’s (D) boys with girl’s names,
And (A) visa-versa I pray.
Suppose it all makes perfect sense,
My (E7) greyhound isn’t (A) grey.
Chorus:
Oh my (D) greyhound isn’t grey,
I (A) like him fine that way.
It’s a (B) strange sort of name I know,
I’m (E7) puzzled to this day.
But (D) if you own a greyhound,
Your (A) life won’t be the same.
Now that you’re a member of
The (E7) greyhound racing (A) game.
(A) Whilst out walking Bluey,
Just (D) the other (A) day,
From behind a fence I heard
A (E) little kid’s voice say.
“Hey (D) Mister what’s your doggy’s name,
And (A) what sort of dog is that?”
“My doggy’s name is Bluey son,
He’s a (E7) greyhound, how ‘bout (A) that?”
(A) “Hey Mister are you kidding?”
I (D) heard his voice did (A) say.
“Do I look like a mug to you?
Your (E) doggy isn’t grey.”
I (D) must admit he had me there,
And (A) all that I could say.
“You can search near and far
Ain’t (E7) many that are (A) grey.”
Chorus:
Oh my (D) greyhound isn’t grey,
I (A) like him fine that way.
It’s a (B) strange sort of name I know,
I’m (E7) puzzled to this day.
But (D) if you own a greyhound,
Your (A) life won’t be the same.
Now that you’re a member of
The (E7) greyhound racing (A) game.
Instrumental:
(A) I said to the little fella,
Just (D) ask your dad and (A) mum
If they can bring you to the track.
The (E) next time Bluey runs.
He (D) answered with a big smile,
As (A) I walked past his gate.
“I’d love to come see Bluey run,
I (E7) think that would be (A) great.”
Chorus:
Oh my (D) greyhound isn’t grey,
I (A) like him fine that way.
It’s a (B) strange sort of name I know,
I’m (E7) puzzled to this day.
But (D) if you own a greyhound,
Your (A) life won’t be the same.
Now that you’re a member of
The (E7) greyhound racing (A) game.
Now that you’re a member of
The (E7) greyhound racing (A) game.
Now that you’re a member of
The (E7) greyhound racing (A) game.
